Cole Palmer made Premier League history on Sunday by scoring two penalties in Chelsea’s dramatic 4-3 comeback victory over Tottenham. The 22-year-old forward’s flawless penalty record now stands at 12 consecutive successful spot kicks, surpassing the previous record of 11 held by Manchester City’s Yaya Touré, according to Opta.
Palmer’s record-breaking achievement came in the 84th minute when he converted a daring ‘Panenka’ penalty, chipping the ball gently down the center of the goal. Reflecting on his audacious decision, Palmer said, “When I put the ball down and stepped back, I knew what I was going to do. I thought it was late in the game and a bit crazy, so I just went for it.”
Since joining Chelsea from Manchester City in 2023, Palmer has quickly established himself as one of the Premier League’s top talents, recording 50 goal contributions (33 goals and 17 assists) in just 48 league appearances for his new club. His form has been crucial in Chelsea’s rise to second place in the Premier League.
In the match against Tottenham, Palmer not only scored two penalties but also assisted in one of Chelsea’s goals. After Tottenham initially surged to a 2-0 lead following early mistakes by Chelsea, Palmer helped steady the ship. He won a penalty after Yves Bissouma fouled Moisés Caicedo in the box, converting the spot kick to level the score at 2-2 just after the hour mark.
Palmer later played a pivotal role in the 73rd-minute go-ahead goal. He dribbled past multiple defenders before passing to Enzo Fernández, whose strike gave Chelsea a 3-2 lead. Palmer then made it 4-2 with his cheeky Panenka penalty, before Son Heung-min scored a late consolation for Tottenham.
With this win, Chelsea now sits just four points behind league leaders Liverpool, though they have played one more match. Despite the strong performance, Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca urged caution, emphasizing the team’s focus on gradual improvement. “Enjoy the day off with family and friends, and when we come back, go again with 100%, train well, and get ready for the next game,” he said.
