Javier Mascherano Named New Inter Miami Head Coach

Former Argentina captain Javier Mascherano takes the reins at Inter Miami, reuniting with Lionel Messi in his first senior managerial role.

Inter Miami has announced Javier Mascherano as its new head coach, marking the Argentine’s first senior managerial role. Mascherano, who previously coached Argentina’s Under-20 team and led the national squad at the 2024 Paris Olympics, steps into the position following Gerardo Martino’s resignation for personal reasons.

Mascherano, 40, expressed his excitement about the opportunity, stating:
“To lead a club like Inter Miami is an honor and a privilege I will strive to make the most of. I’m drawn to the club’s ambition and the infrastructure supporting it. I’m looking forward to helping Inter Miami reach new heights and giving fans more unforgettable moments.”

Inter Miami co-owner David Beckham welcomed Mascherano with enthusiasm, praising his relentless determination and extensive knowledge of the game. “Javier has always demonstrated what makes him great—determination, instincts, and understanding. We’re excited for him to lead our team,” Beckham said.

Mascherano reunites with Lionel Messi, his longtime teammate at Barcelona and for the Argentine national team. The two shared nearly eight years at the Catalan club, where they won multiple La Liga and Copa del Rey titles, as well as two Champions League trophies (2011, 2015).

He joins a squad already brimming with former Barcelona stars, including Messi, Jordi Alba, Sergio Busquets, and Luis Suárez.

A Storied Career

Mascherano enjoyed a glittering playing career as both a central defender and defensive midfielder. After debuting for River Plate in 2003, he played for Corinthians, West Ham, and Liverpool before a successful seven-and-a-half-year stint at Barcelona. He later played in the Chinese Super League and returned to Argentina with Estudiantes before retiring in 2020.

Internationally, Mascherano earned 147 caps for Argentina, second only to Messi, and captained the national team between 2008 and 2011.

Inter Miami’s Expectations

Inter Miami had a record-breaking MLS regular season in 2024, accumulating 74 points and securing the Supporters’ Shield. Despite entering the playoffs as favorites, the team suffered a surprising first-round elimination by Atlanta United.

With Mascherano’s leadership, the club aims to build on its recent success and make a deeper impact in both domestic and international competitions. His appointment adds to Miami’s growing reputation as a hub for global soccer talent.
