Pete Hegseth’s Controversial Military Views and Past Policies

Pete Hegseth, known for his role as a Fox News host, has expressed controversial views on military intervention, including supporting the use of troops to quell protests, endorsing enhanced interrogation methods, and calling for pardons for convicted war criminals.

Pete Hegseth, a co-host of “Fox & Friends,” is known for his outspoken and often controversial views on military policies. One of the most notable instances came during the protests in June 2020, when Hegseth suggested that the military be deployed to Seattle to suppress protests that had turned into a self-declared autonomous zone. He argued that the only way to restore order was through military intervention, likening the situation to teaching a rebellious child a lesson.

As a prominent supporter of former President Donald Trump, Hegseth’s stance on military intervention in domestic affairs was aligned with some of Trump’s more controversial policies. Trump, while never ordering active-duty troops to suppress protests, did deploy the National Guard in Washington, D.C., during the summer riots, a move that Hegseth supported. Hegseth also praised a proposal by Republican Senator Tom Cotton, which advocated for the military’s involvement in quelling nationwide unrest. This position divided public opinion, with some Pentagon officials expressing concern over the potential dangers of using military force against civilians.

Hegseth’s views extend beyond the handling of protests. He has repeatedly supported controversial military tactics, such as waterboarding, and has advocated for pardoning U.S. soldiers convicted of war crimes. He argued that soldiers should not be criminalized for killing enemies in battle, even if the methods were unorthodox. Additionally, Hegseth endorsed military action against cultural sites in Iran, a policy that would violate international law and the Pentagon’s guidelines.

Despite his strong military background, having served nearly 20 years in the Army National Guard, Hegseth’s selection for a potential position as Secretary of Defense has been met with scrutiny. His lack of experience in managing large institutions like the Pentagon, combined with his controversial stances, has raised concerns about his ability to effectively lead the Department of Defense.

Hegseth’s military service, including deployments to Guantanamo Bay, Iraq, and Afghanistan, has been a cornerstone of his public persona. However, his outspoken views on national security and military tactics have positioned him as a polarizing figure in American politics. While his supporters argue that his policies are in line with a strong, America-first military strategy, critics warn that his approach could undermine both military professionalism and international relations.
