Ziyad al-Nakhalah, the secretary general of the Palestinian resistance movement Islamic Jihad, commented on the recent political changes in Syria, calling them an “internal matter” for the Arab country. In a statement issued on Monday, Nakhalah emphasized that the shifts in Syria’s political landscape were a direct result of the choices made by the Syrian people.
He expressed his hope that Syria would continue to stand firmly with the Palestinian people and their cause, as it has in the past, underlining the long-standing support Syria has provided to Palestine.
The statement follows the recent escalation in Syria, where armed opposition groups gained control of Damascus in a rapid offensive that led to the departure of President Bashar al-Assad. The unexpected military maneuver took the Syrian government by surprise, resulting in the fall of the capital.
Meanwhile, Hamas, another prominent Palestinian resistance movement, also issued a statement expressing hope that the new leadership in Syria would maintain support for the Palestinian people and the broader resistance movement. Hamas reaffirmed its solidarity with Syria, highlighting the importance of national unity, territorial integrity, and respect for the country’s political choices and independence.
