US Accuses Russia of Attempting to Send Arms to Yemen’s Ansarullah Movement

The United States has accused Russia of trying to send arms to Yemen's Ansarullah, alleging ties to the resistance movement amid ongoing regional conflicts, while also implicating Iran in supporting the group.

nexnews – The United States has accused Russia of attempting to send weapons to Yemen’s Ansarullah (Houthi) movement, claiming that Moscow is actively seeking contact with the group to aid its operations against Israel and its allies in the region. Linda Thomas Greenfield, the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, made these allegations in her address during a Security Council meeting on Wednesday.

Greenfield stated that the U.S. has seen “disturbing evidence” of Russia engaging with the Houthis and discussing potential arms transfers. Additionally, she claimed that reports suggest Russian forces have recruited hundreds of Yemenis to fight in Ukraine, an accusation she labeled as “unjustified.”

While not addressing U.S. military and financial support for Israel in its actions against Palestinians, Greenfield also accused Iran of supplying weapons to Ansarullah. She stated that the U.S. supports increasing the capacity of the UN Monitoring Mechanism to inspect ships bound for Yemeni ports in order to curb Iranian arms transfers to the Houthis.

The U.S. envoy criticized the lack of credible outcomes from Security Council discussions on Yemen, stating that the council’s response has ignored Resolution 2722 and failed to prevent continued attacks by the Houthis. Greenfield also mentioned that the Houthis have continued to target U.S. Navy ships and Israel-bound vessels, actions that have been dismissed by the Yemeni army, which asserts that all ships, except those connected to Israel, are safe in Yemeni waters.

Yemeni forces have repeatedly stated that they will continue to target Israeli and Israel-bound vessels in the Red and Arabian seas as long as Israel’s actions in Gaza continue. In recent months, the Yemeni army has also targeted U.S. and British naval vessels in retaliation for their involvement in the conflict in Yemen.

Washington and London have faced international criticism for their airstrikes on Yemen, which many consider to be under the guise of a UNSC resolution aimed at securing maritime routes but widely viewed as an infringement on Yemeni sovereignty. These developments underscore the complex international dimensions of the ongoing conflicts in the Middle East.
