Manchester United are gearing up for a massive rebuild under new head coach Ruben Amorim, with reports suggesting a £190m investment in three high-profile signings: Raphinha, Viktor Gyokeres, and Gregor Kobel.
A Struggling Season
The Red Devils have endured a tumultuous 2024/25 campaign, which saw Erik ten Hag replaced by Amorim in November. Despite a fresh managerial approach, United currently sit 13th in the Premier League, with inconsistency plaguing their performances.
In nine matches under Amorim, United have registered four wins, four losses, and one draw across all competitions. While players like Amad Diallo have adapted to the Portuguese coach’s system, the squad still lacks the personnel required for Amorim’s tactical vision.
Raphinha: Amorim’s ‘Obsession’
According to reports from Spain, United have made an offer for Barcelona winger Raphinha after Amorim specifically requested his signing. The Brazilian has been in fine form this season, and Amorim sees him as a key player to “solve United’s problems” in attack.
With Barcelona facing financial struggles, United’s €90m (£78m + £9m in add-ons) bid for Raphinha is expected to test the resolve of the Catalan giants.
Viktor Gyokeres: A €80m Target
Amorim is also keen on bringing Viktor Gyokeres to Old Trafford. The Swedish striker, currently at Sporting CP, has impressed top clubs across Europe with his skills. Gyokeres’ €80m release clause is a significant hurdle, but United are determined to secure his services to bolster their attacking options.
Gregor Kobel: A Goalkeeping Solution
With Amorim reportedly “tired” of Andre Onana’s inconsistent performances, Borussia Dortmund goalkeeper Gregor Kobel has emerged as a priority. United aim to strengthen their defensive line with Kobel, who has been in excellent form for Dortmund.
Leadership Concerns and Bruno Fernandes
United’s captain Bruno Fernandes remains a polarizing figure. Former Red Devils winger Lee Sharpe recently commented on Fernandes’ leadership style, suggesting the midfielder could improve his composure on the pitch:
“Bruno does magical things sometimes, but he also makes errors like giving away sloppy balls. He needs to focus on the simple things and let his natural ability shine in the final third.”
Despite Sharpe’s criticism, Fernandes’ work rate and experience make him the obvious choice for the captaincy, especially as the team lacks other natural leaders. Players like Harry Maguire and Matthijs de Ligt could also step up to share leadership responsibilities.
Amorim’s Rebuild: A New Era at Old Trafford
The planned €230m (£190m) investment signals United’s commitment to backing Amorim’s vision. If these signings materialize, they could mark the beginning of a significant turnaround for Manchester United.
With Raphinha, Gyokeres, and Kobel in sight, the Red Devils aim to re-establish themselves among the Premier League elite.
