Gukesh Dommaraju, 18, Becomes Youngest Chess World Champion in History

Indian prodigy Gukesh Dommaraju makes history as the youngest-ever classical chess world champion at 18, defeating Ding Liren in a nail-biting final in Singapore.

nexnews – Indian chess prodigy Gukesh Dommaraju, just 18 years old, has etched his name into the annals of history as the youngest-ever undisputed classical chess world champion. Gukesh claimed the title after defeating defending champion Ding Liren 7.5-6.5 in a dramatic best-of-14 final held in Singapore on Thursday.

The final game of the match began with both players tied, appearing destined for rapid chess tiebreaks. However, a crucial blunder by Ding in the endgame allowed Gukesh to seize the decisive point, clinching the championship.

The victory left Gukesh visibly emotional. As the final move was confirmed, he broke into tears while Ding sat with his head in his hands, clearly distraught. Social media clips showed jubilant celebrations in India, with fans cheering the victory of their new chess hero, who becomes only the second Indian world chess champion after Viswanathan Anand.

Gukesh Reflects on His Historic Win

Speaking at the post-match press conference, a jubilant Gukesh admitted he initially didn’t recognize Ding’s critical error during the final game. Once he realized the opportunity, he described the moment as “probably the best of my life.”

Gukesh also expressed his gratitude for the support throughout his career. He said:

“My journey began when I was about six-and-a-half years old. I’ve been dreaming of this moment for more than 10 years. Every chess player wants to experience this moment, and very few get the chance. I’m living my dream.”

Gukesh credited divine intervention for his success and added:

“There were so many miracles along the way. This victory wouldn’t have been possible without God and the support of everyone who stood by me.”

At 18, Gukesh surpasses the legendary Garry Kasparov, who was 22 when he won his first world title in 1985.

India Celebrates a New Chess Era

India, a burgeoning chess powerhouse, erupted in celebrations following Gukesh’s historic win. Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised him on X (formerly Twitter):

“Historic and exemplary! Gukesh’s unparalleled talent, hard work, and determination have inspired millions of young minds to dream big. Best wishes for his future endeavors.”

President Draupadi Murmu echoed the sentiment, calling Gukesh’s victory a significant milestone in affirming India’s status as a global chess powerhouse.

Legendary cricketer Sachin Tendulkar and Olympian champion Abhinav Bindra also joined in lauding the young chess champion, calling him an inspiration for future generations.

A Nation of Rising Stars

Gukesh’s win further cements India’s reputation as a chess superpower, with numerous prodigies emerging on the global stage. Among them is Rameshbabu Praggnanandhaa, famously known as “Pragg,” who gained global attention after defeating Magnus Carlsen in 2022. Alongside his sister, R Vaishali, Pragg represents a new wave of Indian talent that is reshaping the chess landscape.

As Gukesh Dommaraju begins his reign as the 18th world chess champion, he not only carries forward the legacy of Viswanathan Anand but also inspires a new generation of Indian players to reach for the pinnacle of success in chess.
