Why Six Minarets?
Historically, the decision to construct six minarets was significant. At the time, the Grand Mosque in Mecca, the holiest mosque in Islam, also had six minarets. This created a bit of controversy, as it could be seen as a challenge to Mecca’s supremacy. To resolve this issue and to honor the significance of Mecca, Sultan Ahmed I ordered a seventh minaret to be built at the Grand Mosque in Mecca. This ensured that both mosques were recognized for their importance while maintaining a balance of respect.
