Robbie Keane Appointed Head Coach of Ferencvaros Following Managerial Talks Across Europe

Former Republic of Ireland captain Robbie Keane has been named head coach of Hungarian champions Ferencvaros. Keane, 44, returns to management after stints with Maccabi Tel Aviv and extensive discussions with clubs in England, Scotland, Belgium, Greece, and Turkey. Ferencvaros offers Keane the opportunity to compete in the Europa League and continue their domestic title challenge.

Robbie Keane has been appointed as the new head coach of Ferencvaros, the Hungarian champions, after considering multiple offers from clubs across Europe. The 44-year-old former Republic of Ireland captain officially took charge on Monday, following his departure from Israeli club Maccabi Tel Aviv earlier this year.

A statement on Ferencvaros’ official website announced the news:
“We are delighted to welcome Robbie Keane, the 146-cap former Republic of Ireland player, as the new head coach of our 35-time champion and 24-time cup-winning team. Keane will lead us forward as we continue our domestic and European campaigns.”

Keane’s appointment fills the vacancy left by Pascal Jansen, who moved to manage New York City FC in MLS. The Irishman arrived in Budapest on Sunday and will join the squad at their Spanish training camp before focusing on Ferencvaros’ Europa League and Hungarian league campaigns.

Prior to accepting the Ferencvaros role, Keane held talks with multiple clubs, including Cardiff City, Coventry City, Union SG in Belgium, and teams in Greece and Turkey. Despite being a contender for these posts, Keane chose Ferencvaros, citing the opportunity to coach in European competition and the club’s strong infrastructure as key factors.

Speaking about his decision, Keane said:
“The most important thing for me in a football club is the people. Alex Ferguson once told me, ‘Don’t pick the club, pick the people,’ and that’s something I’ve taken to heart. I look forward to implementing my vision for exciting, high-energy football that the fans will enjoy. My focus will always be on the next game, pushing the players to improve every day.”

Keane expressed his ambition to deliver entertaining football, grow fan engagement, and continue the club’s success both domestically and in Europe. Ferencvaros currently sit second in the Hungarian league, trailing leaders Puskas Akademia by one point.

This marks Keane’s second permanent managerial role after guiding Maccabi Tel Aviv to the Israeli league title last season. With Ferencvaros well-placed in their Europa League group and a strong domestic foundation, Keane aims to build on the club’s storied history and elevate their performances to new heights.
