Rome’s legendary Colosseum, famed for its ancient gladiatorial battles, is now embroiled in a modern controversy. Airbnb, in partnership with the Colosseum Archaeological Park, has announced a $1.5 million project tied to the release of Gladiator II. This promotion offers 16 participants the chance to engage in mock gladiator battles at the ancient site in May 2025.
Although organizers assure the public that events will respect the Colosseum’s historical value and occur outside regular hours, critics argue the plan undermines the dignity of one of the world’s most iconic landmarks.
Massimiliano Smeriglio, Rome’s culture councilor, has demanded the cancellation of the event, calling it disrespectful. “This is not about collaboration but avoiding the trivialization of our historical and artistic heritage,” he said.
Other officials, including Erica Battaglia and Enzo Foschi, have expressed similar concerns, warning against turning the Colosseum into a theme-park-like attraction. Battaglia emphasized the need to protect the monument as a universal heritage site.
Supporters of the project, including members of the government, see it as a creative way to combine education, conservation, and tourism, with funds allocated for the Colosseum’s restoration.
As Rome anticipates an influx of visitors for the 2025 Holy Jubilee, debates continue over how to manage the growing tourism industry while safeguarding cultural treasures.
